Antimachia is a traditional village located in the heart of Kos Island, 25 kilometres from Kos town. Rich in history and culture, it is home to the Venetian castle of the Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Castle of Antimachia. This testament to the island’s medieval past dates back to the 14th century. Although mostly destroyed in the earthquake of 1926, with only its walls remaining well-preserved, the castle offers a glimpse into the island’s strategic importance during the medieval era.
The village is also known for its traditional windmill, which has been restored to be one of the very few fully operational and productive windmills in Greece, serving as a symbol of the island’s agricultural heritage. Visitors can explore the windmill and learn about traditional grain milling methods. Antimachia is characterised by its traditional houses, narrow streets, and a sense of timelessness.
It is home to a Folklore Museum, housed in an old traditional house, where visitors can delve into local customs, traditional costumes, and the everyday life of the residents, offering a typical replica of the 20th century. Apart from its sights, Antimachia is also known for its various cultural events, the most notable being a honey festival towards the end of August, where local thyme honey and traditional sweet delicacies are offered to visitors. Antimachia’s charm lies in its ability to preserve its traditional character while welcoming visitors to experience its unique culture and history.
